But I did get to do some botanical printing on my heat press. The prints below were done with a wild grape colour blanket. I'm glad I planted the Japanese maple last year because it shows up well. The other plants are St. John's wort, rose leaves and coreopsis flowers.</span><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDdZMtNjIPDznqrggvNkRuj_OlCAhPfCsQOyPngUDsyXO_AMlQCpEh9qWGlTAL2c_bQ23G4nOiNmAG-h7hcCLIY_oYmQLOXb5Vvj8TeOVIKnHRjVrhLk9PftLVRGRTLngmkytj2bdDXlcO_rdmiL8zYjAb_Oej5v8GTHasSHpruizZggFbWOw_38jJmLlb/s4574/IMG_7050.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4574" data-original-width="3098" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDdZMtNjIPDznqrggvNkRuj_OlCAhPfCsQOyPngUDsyXO_AMlQCpEh9qWGlTAL2c_bQ23G4nOiNmAG-h7hcCLIY_oYmQLOXb5Vvj8TeOVIKnHRjVrhLk9PftLVRGRTLngmkytj2bdDXlcO_rdmiL8zYjAb_Oej5v8GTHasSHpruizZggFbWOw_38jJmLlb/w271-h400/IMG_7050.JPG" width="271" /></a></div><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">The prints below are a little smaller and are overprinted on backgrounds I didn't like that much from previous printing. This is the piece I made for the show. It measures 18.5 X 25.5 inches. It's called New Life. The theme of the show was Spring Awakening. I made this with hand painted fabric (sun printed) for the top and hand painted cotton for the bottom. I added some hand embroidery and machine quilting. I had some hand painted fabrics for sale there and I did sell some. I haven't been posting because I've been unwell for several months. But I'm slowly getting into making some artwork again. My idea was to make a wedding quilt out of the fabrics to hang on the wall. I also had the guests sign a large piece of fabric which I would include. I had set myself a large challenge because I received such a variety of fabrics it was difficult to make them all look good together. I wanted to include all of them so I ended up including some of them on the back. Well it has taken me longer than I had hoped because there were so many little decisions to make and because I realized later that I enjoy the designing part but I don't enjoy quilting the layers together as much. I also went from quilter to textile artist in the meantime so my style has changed. But I realized recently that I really wanted to finish it so I pushed through and here it is ready in time for our 25th wedding anniversary in July 2022! Phew! I'm actually happy with it. It measures 46.5 inches square. Click on each photo to enlarge. </span><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg3nFv1zmKblSLeQy_Y278K5YjnURwcdSgixSW4NDDlN4_DsAzWR4CmUNdPPeNXTqA_JXyfyGdZhAUaWthw-fKC-W6uoGdapNM95GYHiqKLYnumkFRDZXFghsuhHVpGptY59EN1SReNUjH0W-AEYoEvQdSsX5tUX-VwmrKLs6yU99fTpraXIfg9nz4XKA=s3148" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3100" data-original-width="3148" height="394" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg3nFv1zmKblSLeQy_Y278K5YjnURwcdSgixSW4NDDlN4_DsAzWR4CmUNdPPeNXTqA_JXyfyGdZhAUaWthw-fKC-W6uoGdapNM95GYHiqKLYnumkFRDZXFghsuhHVpGptY59EN1SReNUjH0W-AEYoEvQdSsX5tUX-VwmrKLs6yU99fTpraXIfg9nz4XKA=w400-h394" width="400" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"> <span style="font-size: small;">This is the back of the quilt:</span></span><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjgA1bzMWBJPejNHVbbr7iV9Y97fPYEbYUgb5Zia4pfKq1Q56oSDkR6laZd3j3N47MXFTl7woZu8IebzoNfovPesPMsKmnXCxqJtXsEzAgfPa5TTdYAFoK0WCXdk9E-r-sex83W4gz7mI-zRwHmstKr_xWoPLw06wKv4ZyDsuvIJUVxe765Cqtw9P2OZw=s5184" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="5184" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjgA1bzMWBJPejNHVbbr7iV9Y97fPYEbYUgb5Zia4pfKq1Q56oSDkR6laZd3j3N47MXFTl7woZu8IebzoNfovPesPMsKmnXCxqJtXsEzAgfPa5TTdYAFoK0WCXdk9E-r-sex83W4gz7mI-zRwHmstKr_xWoPLw06wKv4ZyDsuvIJUVxe765Cqtw9P2OZw=w400-h266" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p><span style="font-size: small;">The signed piece of fabric:</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEguWT7Ef8Sa3lL696X2BGql6lLrYZRsYr5uLZ8PXGFi0mU2joNBDRgJo00_C5BkH-rAn0bUQZg3ylYhbxDcOKo07BznH0c8F_qdGLQ0VQV-ugTXReMJDcdTTvvrpWBdlpcA_fxgS6_ybxz-vg6fqE8ZXbTZTKOukl1NW8w_uyOeLyaWyu75gQf8d_G-zA=s5184" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="5184" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEguWT7Ef8Sa3lL696X2BGql6lLrYZRsYr5uLZ8PXGFi0mU2joNBDRgJo00_C5BkH-rAn0bUQZg3ylYhbxDcOKo07BznH0c8F_qdGLQ0VQV-ugTXReMJDcdTTvvrpWBdlpcA_fxgS6_ybxz-vg6fqE8ZXbTZTKOukl1NW8w_uyOeLyaWyu75gQf8d_G-zA=w400-h266" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p><span style="font-size: small;">And here is the label I made for it:</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFYWMc5ZcUNpPYuJvOFeZ0mkyZUPgAGj_Ce3HKlLYZkLPxdfmHOtyGE3C5GOvE5MUni8spXUDyPOX9N6JnxM3yvqJHnRV2MkcYv7x_clt7U0sXX0zJ4M467Ao7ac9on7cXeODabYtNYzEr_tnaEBJpGjX50joUONDExSxh6VQiPXfPg6jKbUpufwRocw=s5184" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="5184" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiFYWMc5ZcUNpPYuJvOFeZ0mkyZUPgAGj_Ce3HKlLYZkLPxdfmHOtyGE3C5GOvE5MUni8spXUDyPOX9N6JnxM3yvqJHnRV2MkcYv7x_clt7U0sXX0zJ4M467Ao7ac9on7cXeODabYtNYzEr_tnaEBJpGjX50joUONDExSxh6VQiPXfPg6jKbUpufwRocw=w400-h266" width="400" /></a></div><p><span style="font-size: small;">Please leave a comment below and thanks for having a look!</span><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-66475217063109378462021-12-18T12:02:00.003-08:002021-12-18T12:07:21.833-08:00Botanical Playdate Results<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Here are the results of my eco printing session with Janet Tulloch last week. We had such fun learning from each other! Janet works more with felted wool and I work with cotton and silk. I also showed her how to use the heat press on paper and a little on fabric. We used leaves we had frozen last month. We used a logwood blanket on cotton fabric and with the eco printing on watercolour paper.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> A photo of me rolling my fabric onto the bundle rod:</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZJR0aDR7oSCV5HU7sk8EUaxqO-A60k7gDjnw1Ko7jgABtB1frPhJyozRZgUP2kcdhfWN6mwfKAiK50EOquzvGgYV6n-6CRn8R27MQCvG9b30MvFDHiaOZ1qZx7xhYQSk-XM44MXwR5lEC/s2048/PlaydateJanet+%25283%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZJR0aDR7oSCV5HU7sk8EUaxqO-A60k7gDjnw1Ko7jgABtB1frPhJyozRZgUP2kcdhfWN6mwfKAiK50EOquzvGgYV6n-6CRn8R27MQCvG9b30MvFDHiaOZ1qZx7xhYQSk-XM44MXwR5lEC/w400-h225/PlaydateJanet+%25283%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /> <br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> Here is my layout on a beautiful sample of felted wool that Janet gave me. <br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFhgFQOPZu4UQjM30hzIBVBn5nwTE_BGr8sOP7i4iv_99b5ZRdSeZUaOGRKrQ0G4b3d33LOMGD-zqgjTYh71c1Xo4iq0dmssiFpPYemhU2jhL1l25Lmduj7BMnVcWR9zuSNqE4fbvoE81D/s2048/IMG_5924.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFhgFQOPZu4UQjM30hzIBVBn5nwTE_BGr8sOP7i4iv_99b5ZRdSeZUaOGRKrQ0G4b3d33LOMGD-zqgjTYh71c1Xo4iq0dmssiFpPYemhU2jhL1l25Lmduj7BMnVcWR9zuSNqE4fbvoE81D/w400-h266/IMG_5924.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /> Here are our leaves laid out on cotton fabric strips which were premordanted:<br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9PkzbbMhfWTuwBbsjA_oMrwR5Wxzd6lTjQ6GfpP3QL7g1vx2vrRmdVqZjT7bTikyR9VCAO0cpnM-u1rAU365SOsnBrUH1W6zgG9gUxQtyDbAIYxzAMtYUUf7n_P6-CWv2PDc3SNMFCKGX/s2048/IMG_5927.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9PkzbbMhfWTuwBbsjA_oMrwR5Wxzd6lTjQ6GfpP3QL7g1vx2vrRmdVqZjT7bTikyR9VCAO0cpnM-u1rAU365SOsnBrUH1W6zgG9gUxQtyDbAIYxzAMtYUUf7n_P6-CWv2PDc3SNMFCKGX/w400-h266/IMG_5927.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /> Janet's paper prints from the heat press using logwood as a colour blanket and avocado:<br /></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtDrZx5yQdZiI4Dcel_9GmhOUxGEKhZpWFJIdRI8QKUJRnQjEjL1kVq7zNBSlULTSliGt08B7Cc0yHep3gHLhndIrUUnwk2OmbztUafkNODnlDiHUTPO00iSt8508HW8NfHuhCS_W3GIvf/s2048/IMG_5928.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtDrZx5yQdZiI4Dcel_9GmhOUxGEKhZpWFJIdRI8QKUJRnQjEjL1kVq7zNBSlULTSliGt08B7Cc0yHep3gHLhndIrUUnwk2OmbztUafkNODnlDiHUTPO00iSt8508HW8NfHuhCS_W3GIvf/w400-h266/IMG_5928.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /> I'll post some of the results of yesterday's eco printing session soon!</span><br /><p></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-21711168622924610502021-11-02T13:33:00.004-07:002021-11-02T13:43:17.437-07:00Stittsville show more photos<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Here are some photos of the art in the glass display case at the Stittsville Library 2021 show. The theme this year is "Guess the Idiom". The idea is that people stand back and guess the idiom before reading the captions. Please go and have a look at the show if you can this month until November 29th. Some of the pieces are for sale. Here are some photos of the artwork in case you can't come and see the show. <b>Please click on the images to enlarge.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Below on the left is Dorothy Derose's piece called The Sound of and her idiom is "talking in circles". On the right top is Time Flies by Janet Stanley. The dragonflies and butterflies in her piece are arranged in an around the clock pattern. On the right below is So Sad by Margaret Dunsmore and her idiom is "lame duck".<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcWyKTjlKZGpMW136tmlo-r7L3qK_0WxWgvThvzBwmhA5jpMalX29B6HhCyGB6wov5r4WL5uFAr4o8uZ7X_8mVpRmONLWP4dEhIs1CT3UMgLwkx6JkGSJoGLKyTo_-eWQyVcVTwHz40K6Z/s2048/Stittsville2021+%25282%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1752" data-original-width="2048" height="343" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcWyKTjlKZGpMW136tmlo-r7L3qK_0WxWgvThvzBwmhA5jpMalX29B6HhCyGB6wov5r4WL5uFAr4o8uZ7X_8mVpRmONLWP4dEhIs1CT3UMgLwkx6JkGSJoGLKyTo_-eWQyVcVTwHz40K6Z/w400-h343/Stittsville2021+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /> </span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">In the photo below on the top left is Buried Treasure (X marks the spot) by Daphne Fry. The show will be up from November 2-29th. The theme this year is "Guess the Idiom". Artists have made pieces depicting idioms. Please go and have a look and see when you stand in front of a piece of artwork if you can guess what idiom it is before reading the description!<br /> The library is at 1637 Stittsville Main Street and the hours are Monday to Thursday 10am to 8:30pm, Friday from 1 to 6pm, Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 1 to 5pm. Here is the poster for the show which you can feel free to circulate. I hope you have a chance to go and have a look!</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color: #0b5394;"><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span></p><p><span style="color: #0b5394;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3giiPQT7sREPNaPmE2wQp-8O-7zTI-mxheJxVKmgiskNo7qA_4aBVwA7uDfgZD9dGpqBPHqoz0PYcQ2jHiuawuByS-wBTafzFjKEwMmoCzqxvRX4PWXM1d2eCgqsZ3LE1vFtNJEis2SYs/s1080/IdiomPoster.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3giiPQT7sREPNaPmE2wQp-8O-7zTI-mxheJxVKmgiskNo7qA_4aBVwA7uDfgZD9dGpqBPHqoz0PYcQ2jHiuawuByS-wBTafzFjKEwMmoCzqxvRX4PWXM1d2eCgqsZ3LE1vFtNJEis2SYs/w400-h400/IdiomPoster.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /> </span><br /><p></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-90299987882302643532021-07-29T04:41:00.003-07:002021-07-29T04:44:07.790-07:00Printing on a Heat Press<p>This month I've been taking a course with Jane Dunnewold eco printing on a heat press. I find it works more quickly and quite differently than the traditional steaming method. Here's a photo of the press I got. It's a Siser 15 X 15 inch press. You can see I made teflon covers for the platens.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXbIyHHyU_B3uLdkU55dEAl4H-XKH293NFiGSlpt2dIoj8p72DVju4oaPRc0wXe2ovgUSSx03SBgvvCCR1SE1QsB9s1rGciJWcgcHrsKFac__rOB_LgjTf013sQqGRGyO8VfufsJbbKEmJ/s2048/HeatPress.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXbIyHHyU_B3uLdkU55dEAl4H-XKH293NFiGSlpt2dIoj8p72DVju4oaPRc0wXe2ovgUSSx03SBgvvCCR1SE1QsB9s1rGciJWcgcHrsKFac__rOB_LgjTf013sQqGRGyO8VfufsJbbKEmJ/w266-h400/HeatPress.JPG" width="266" /></a></div><br /> Here are a few of my first prints on watercolour paper on the press. The colours and the prints are more intense I find. This is coreopsis and smoke bush leaves on the left and coreopsis and rose leaves on the right. The smoke bush was not quite ready for printing yet.<br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsBwF0AjOD_BCvS0YojkZIiPqyFvlvunOGrhbdTPyAhCF-WP1FNAOsh4EscLrJZ_NXLDHqxCl6Dzdg49Efsljs8Olyy-3P4RbZYsOHIFyhPJQ5bwUeR0WsTrmdQsac8MxP-9QgUYGSNxG/s2048/FirstHeatPress+%25282%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1258" data-original-width="2048" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsBwF0AjOD_BCvS0YojkZIiPqyFvlvunOGrhbdTPyAhCF-WP1FNAOsh4EscLrJZ_NXLDHqxCl6Dzdg49Efsljs8Olyy-3P4RbZYsOHIFyhPJQ5bwUeR0WsTrmdQsac8MxP-9QgUYGSNxG/w400-h246/FirstHeatPress+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /></p><p>I have lots of coreopsis in the garden and they come out bright orange... This one was about making print pastes with natural dyes and printing with them on fabric. <b>Click on any of the photos to enlarge</b>. Here is a photo of a sample with some of the colours:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8lN_VWsIOWndegbnDTW5CS3eJ1tZs6i0BhJSW2Keok6YaNM7oJrpVrCaNB175cGWnpdDTchG-pXiOA05RzNyhdmkU79V3ANxVU_ZlN3Xe9sQT1oI8iwVtvS5ud3YITkLK186T2lrtoTC/s2048/SampleAfterSteaming.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="2048" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8lN_VWsIOWndegbnDTW5CS3eJ1tZs6i0BhJSW2Keok6YaNM7oJrpVrCaNB175cGWnpdDTchG-pXiOA05RzNyhdmkU79V3ANxVU_ZlN3Xe9sQT1oI8iwVtvS5ud3YITkLK186T2lrtoTC/w400-h283/SampleAfterSteaming.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>We also made iron mordant paste and overdyed with yellow. I used osage orange to overdye in this case. The iron mordant paste became very dark. I would use less ferrous sulfate next time I do this.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNvv9r__wWPRUSOKBMSTES5Wz7GYre3YckAoE76EvXZrSWFao-GUAJK3uY1acOzrI66JnkF7O3AXcZZf723eNnOGbn0ELQ1Z8EqUm9sn8ARe5t1wtM7TLWs-P9hFf24YZjjeAvfnWpxQ7r/s2048/IronMordant+%25282%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1575" data-original-width="2048" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNvv9r__wWPRUSOKBMSTES5Wz7GYre3YckAoE76EvXZrSWFao-GUAJK3uY1acOzrI66JnkF7O3AXcZZf723eNnOGbn0ELQ1Z8EqUm9sn8ARe5t1wtM7TLWs-P9hFf24YZjjeAvfnWpxQ7r/w400-h308/IronMordant+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p> </p><p>Here's a photo of some gelli plate prints I made with the natural dye pastes. Cotton seems to have similar properties to a protein fibre after treating it with soy milk and leaving it to cure for a while. I had read about this but after I bought Rebecca Desnos' book Botanical Colour at your Fingertips I learned more. Up until now I've only been able to get grays from black beans on cotton. Here is a photo of some cotton and silk on the line after soy "mordanting" and using black beans and osage orange as a dye. I still had to use alum to get the deeper blue/purple from the black beans:</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOfi1BSr5fiRI8R8hBOn1pREzNjBBPZMC4tj3m8QWI_PtvfnCqhYsRv6ZM-YQ8EAv18Zb5rWhhpKcjSPlZF-30QSzJdU5qiwLolBDE0G402nEgTKqnSH1FZK4TFKaw6RIpTkmQ3seA_av9/s2048/IMG_4826.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOfi1BSr5fiRI8R8hBOn1pREzNjBBPZMC4tj3m8QWI_PtvfnCqhYsRv6ZM-YQ8EAv18Zb5rWhhpKcjSPlZF-30QSzJdU5qiwLolBDE0G402nEgTKqnSH1FZK4TFKaw6RIpTkmQ3seA_av9/w400-h266/IMG_4826.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Thanks for having a look and hope you're enjoying some of your own natural dyeing experiments! We used to have it at Kitchissippi United Church every April but things are of course different this year. Here's the poster with all the info. As you can see I happen to have a photo of a piece I made on this poster too although it's not in the show. I have some of my hand coloured and sun printed fabrics in the show and one wall hanging featuring my eco printing for sale. It's the one I had in the Stittsville Library show. The show will be starting this Friday. Please go and have a look at not just mine but all the interesting artwork! </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPtKGrVbuRi5FxeWyk8svHfmls5-240CteLtjQNFYUBl8hAqFdC5cloy0ClHTsejReVISnCC4SHFSDCkmoHKRrFL_uywnByTs0VB2HJnzzcaZUlu_nTI-z7zFubfiGT4QvL8fHhA3qpYYO/s2048/FF2021+poster-v1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPtKGrVbuRi5FxeWyk8svHfmls5-240CteLtjQNFYUBl8hAqFdC5cloy0ClHTsejReVISnCC4SHFSDCkmoHKRrFL_uywnByTs0VB2HJnzzcaZUlu_nTI-z7zFubfiGT4QvL8fHhA3qpYYO/w400-h400/FF2021+poster-v1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-71593898644253870802021-04-03T07:42:00.003-07:002021-04-03T07:42:30.603-07:00Eco printed apron<p> Last summer I did a course with the Wild Dyery online. For the Leaf Print Cloth course I made an apron out of all the eco printed samples I made. They are mostly on silk noil. I've printed plants from my garden and area such as rose leaves, buckthorn leaves, strawberry leaves, maple leaves, iris petals and a Bachelor's Button flower. The pink is from natural madder dye. The browny pink is from avocado pits. Here's a photo of the apron spread out so you can see all the fabrics. Click on it to see the details. I added embroidery on some areas.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0AhvpnyP4zSpQacuZWoEg65cW7YD4qmnBfCAbQqw6c6BEPjFvdkKLH0WGuKhouyVSDe2aUhaqXh05VdLPbJV4xkaUiYe2fr4yFSIexjbESEnt9Bvq6SOH2VvV37v4J9vVdQsZUAxMXTWO/s2048/IMG_4722+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1478" data-original-width="2048" height="289" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0AhvpnyP4zSpQacuZWoEg65cW7YD4qmnBfCAbQqw6c6BEPjFvdkKLH0WGuKhouyVSDe2aUhaqXh05VdLPbJV4xkaUiYe2fr4yFSIexjbESEnt9Bvq6SOH2VvV37v4J9vVdQsZUAxMXTWO/w400-h289/IMG_4722+%25282%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Here's a photo of the finished apron. I seem to accumulate a lot of plastic food packaging and I've kept it because it's colourful, because I don't want to throw it out and I wanted to make something with it. Here's an example of some of the packing I have.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXK_ky0t2raZXj8VdBzbUpWom9Pto4s8Q49BQKTy6fk1sy3yBVQZuP0-GQFEG3YZe0-sTPRvTGqgoGMl1XE15YDx7hbSdt9w0fhQpTS-fyZjdhCrVxhSk3AKOvdawqLSpCXZSD7To54ya_/s2048/IMG_4656.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1371" data-original-width="2048" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXK_ky0t2raZXj8VdBzbUpWom9Pto4s8Q49BQKTy6fk1sy3yBVQZuP0-GQFEG3YZe0-sTPRvTGqgoGMl1XE15YDx7hbSdt9w0fhQpTS-fyZjdhCrVxhSk3AKOvdawqLSpCXZSD7To54ya_/w400-h268/IMG_4656.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Below is a grocery bag I made out of eight packages.. It's lying on its side. I've cut off the zip part and then just sewn the packages together so each side is double layered. I've cut out a square from each side for the bottom and have sewn the two layers together (quite hard to turn).<br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0nu1GYIXIwrsVnWphEHD5sBmnoIYbhBJONxuz2DwOxGlOYPY22H9P73__Icj3Nkc4JAA6veMqfWtDWBaDBLK3Xv07WaA6OCcoyuw83DaByd0ZEyAEYTQtyq0BwEiqEcTCh9CB9WCDLLgA/s2048/IMG_4704.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1424" data-original-width="2048" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0nu1GYIXIwrsVnWphEHD5sBmnoIYbhBJONxuz2DwOxGlOYPY22H9P73__Icj3Nkc4JAA6veMqfWtDWBaDBLK3Xv07WaA6OCcoyuw83DaByd0ZEyAEYTQtyq0BwEiqEcTCh9CB9WCDLLgA/w400-h278/IMG_4704.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Here's another angle below. It was quite heavy plastic so I had to use a jeans needle. This bag is quite large and will hold lots of groceries. My next step is to make a handle for it:) Stay tuned for more...<br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1ZLyKHNBfeZxw_snI8L7JnWEyi7sXie6x-YUrsG9Gluqa8-0FTGHdy7zwiErZ3VBuAIbJyv6Qi7L4TgsTsB0aRsAmHv4JYOww5Hy85fU8kqwEJ6qyP4l_V1G2l-qjeiLJj6k6SzQYRVly/s2048/IMG_4705.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1ZLyKHNBfeZxw_snI8L7JnWEyi7sXie6x-YUrsG9Gluqa8-0FTGHdy7zwiErZ3VBuAIbJyv6Qi7L4TgsTsB0aRsAmHv4JYOww5Hy85fU8kqwEJ6qyP4l_V1G2l-qjeiLJj6k6SzQYRVly/w400-h266/IMG_4705.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-85353295108948730432021-01-23T12:55:00.001-08:002021-01-23T12:55:26.153-08:00Eco print cushion<p> This month I made a cushion with eco printed cotton fabric and onion skin dyed cotton fabric for the borders and back. It measures 14 inches square and the plants are coreopsis verticillata and strawberry leaves both from my garden. The fabric was soaked in tannin water first and then the print was made. I was going to embroider the print but decided to leave it as is. Thanks for having a look:)<br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6O2hK9cI0r23pshIblRYOVR6B5D_qpooPeKeSbsfdnxFnJGhyvT6moC_0Fzs5qQjOcNGTApg3ghcIxbEWOjfnje4UactYVWI0uMf4Nuh7nsNZNXc2ST0vMYkhqFHWPeyu20GIitBCbiSb/s2048/EcoPrintCushion+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1963" data-original-width="2048" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6O2hK9cI0r23pshIblRYOVR6B5D_qpooPeKeSbsfdnxFnJGhyvT6moC_0Fzs5qQjOcNGTApg3ghcIxbEWOjfnje4UactYVWI0uMf4Nuh7nsNZNXc2ST0vMYkhqFHWPeyu20GIitBCbiSb/w400-h384/EcoPrintCushion+%25281%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-40841042908093094942020-12-05T07:00:00.004-08:002020-12-08T08:56:44.314-08:00My piece in the Stittsville show<p> Here's a close up of the piece I made for the 2020 Stittsville Library show. It measures 12 inches by 15 inches (30 cm X 38 cm). It's called Finding Comfort in Nature. I made an eco print on watercolour paper and scanned it onto white cotton fabric. Then I attached it to a hand painted piece of blue fabric to use as a background and did some hand and machine stitching. Click on the image to enlarge. <b>Look at the posts below for more of the Stittsville 2020 show.</b> Thanks for having a look!<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ9s1Fe2H_XmnG99YFHJ9bdRywvkeX6TdJ2nX5nIBfxT-oGot937qA64BxLsbeOi3pqtGSFAFs85pkh6JTY2vZAVP9cQvwCvUFXetIYzbn2XW4lBco5CJIc7VP8baa3wa2ow-RIREwqGJT/s2048/FindingComfortinNature+%25281%2529.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1676" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ9s1Fe2H_XmnG99YFHJ9bdRywvkeX6TdJ2nX5nIBfxT-oGot937qA64BxLsbeOi3pqtGSFAFs85pkh6JTY2vZAVP9cQvwCvUFXetIYzbn2XW4lBco5CJIc7VP8baa3wa2ow-RIREwqGJT/w328-h400/FindingComfortinNature+%25281%2529.JPG" width="328" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-16604338394827278342020-12-03T05:21:00.006-08:002020-12-03T05:25:48.391-08:00Few more photos of Stittsville Library show<p> I went back to the library to take a few more photos of the ones that weren't as clear. We hung it up today and it will be up until December 31st. The theme this year is "2020: Year of the Pandemic." Members were encouraged to make something related to the theme or to contribute something they made this year. Hopefully some people will be able to go and visit it. But in case they can't here are some photos. Here's a photo of the approach to the gallery area:<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi32y2NPK6mnDtFzzLqUiV4iE8EUzwZUws4DDszAF6quw_G_kDdArnDrVezeYLkKKHEW0LXZ51weQJiUnCa62MDyiz8Njnuzgg9iWRXr_HnWOgxNTSXtzXAY5psLkEdcF4eBt8C8033-x9g/s2048/Stittsville2020+%25288%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Here are some of my fabrics in the sun. You can see I put some ferns and sumac leaves on them to create the prints.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAqoTgKj3p-hRAOoi_nIGcKM8BcYrddCmskcI4BPa-ewPQwU1yejr7tIXEQl2dxVYhL-hhGyPUjgGA_IU9atUNqgE6iLrghM3J_qunqlkQ4yhQztmp8gob13NUCUUUEwen112J8EuZKkTK/s2048/IMG_4043.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAqoTgKj3p-hRAOoi_nIGcKM8BcYrddCmskcI4BPa-ewPQwU1yejr7tIXEQl2dxVYhL-hhGyPUjgGA_IU9atUNqgE6iLrghM3J_qunqlkQ4yhQztmp8gob13NUCUUUEwen112J8EuZKkTK/w400-h267/IMG_4043.JPG" width="400" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here is how the fern print turned out:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsQQzL835Wtldzbu7NTfCl1sDnoj28rzQRK4mgm_kOkwifKnrHyTSJXnS511rmzh8yyyR45HKH3C5JjiJZaG6HovgmkvXqIuDEtAZFjTNQFf8xpRI1vvORX_AZ4E2qDW6wzdvMD6D5LR_z/s2048/IMG_4053.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1246" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsQQzL835Wtldzbu7NTfCl1sDnoj28rzQRK4mgm_kOkwifKnrHyTSJXnS511rmzh8yyyR45HKH3C5JjiJZaG6HovgmkvXqIuDEtAZFjTNQFf8xpRI1vvORX_AZ4E2qDW6wzdvMD6D5LR_z/s640/IMG_4053.JPG" /></a></div><p>And here is how the sumac print turned out:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0HVwPEZjvjGsf7ikZKmQGFzKIk2plONsxzq6miaM1eJG_aNN1P5KAkyp_3ze-bUn0V-XaruhzFEZ7YrRKnPU1FeFPF8X1mI2wA1o32sgQyfLt1B8hBV5AHu4mWCRmYj6WnKVW2fq24RZh/s2048/IMG_4054.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1227" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0HVwPEZjvjGsf7ikZKmQGFzKIk2plONsxzq6miaM1eJG_aNN1P5KAkyp_3ze-bUn0V-XaruhzFEZ7YrRKnPU1FeFPF8X1mI2wA1o32sgQyfLt1B8hBV5AHu4mWCRmYj6WnKVW2fq24RZh/s640/IMG_4054.JPG" /></a></div><p>Here's a selection of the fabrics I made this summer. I attached the pages with some white embroidery floss and did a blanket stitch around the outside with yarn I had dyed in red cactus flowers so generously given to me by my friend Pat. Here's a photo below:<br />

For another lesson, I've dyed some silk samples with weld (yellow), madder (red) and indigo (blue). By combining some of the colours you also get orange and purple. So I had six colours. Then a sample of each colour was dipped into iron solution to get six more colours. The top row has the original colours and the bottom row are the same colours dipped in iron solution Here is the swatch book of samples I made with all twelve colours:<br />

It was a fun exercise and gives me lots to experiment with. Thanks for stopping by!Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04329950199969582277noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4784696622283046665.post-82567859768602039062020-07-01T13:20:00.002-07:002020-07-01T13:27:33.117-07:00Printing last weekWe went to the cottage last week and I made some new prints. The left one below is with a new stamp I made from some packaging material. The right one is a shibori print made by tying marbles into the fabric and then colouring it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJEwnLpvtTHnTz848QiXqQFLVQqYV7MACSOTM3_IJ2FMyumY_zRRlcCYzywiLBLtmWZ6mIabTb4Ctiwnq316VVPc5cUgdjkVmqVfkaZfXwYXayVSNw4JUltOzTSRg0JbY3uuEqDwFqeXWG/s1600/IMG_3937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJEwnLpvtTHnTz848QiXqQFLVQqYV7MACSOTM3_IJ2FMyumY_zRRlcCYzywiLBLtmWZ6mIabTb4Ctiwnq316VVPc5cUgdjkVmqVfkaZfXwYXayVSNw4JUltOzTSRg0JbY3uuEqDwFqeXWG/s400/IMG_3937.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The weather was perfect so I couldn't resist making some sun prints with the ferns growing there. These are all about 11 inches square.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCxtkIPWeNEFp8GWBXAhM7GL1SPhrUMqsnpJ3QL956nHeaSoWkVtnbOvIbs8XUckVJgVVP-Ke3U_U2MJvQQfmYxm044gSrlP9B_t8Vo6mWQGR2tEKYgzpcZS1pnaJWF_7-mZ37oXJRsli/s1600/IMG_3953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1473" data-original-width="1600" height="367" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCxtkIPWeNEFp8GWBXAhM7GL1SPhrUMqsnpJ3QL956nHeaSoWkVtnbOvIbs8XUckVJgVVP-Ke3U_U2MJvQQfmYxm044gSrlP9B_t8Vo6mWQGR2tEKYgzpcZS1pnaJWF_7-mZ37oXJRsli/s400/IMG_3953.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is another sun print in the first stage. I'm learning to make layered sunprints:) So after this was done I put the plants back on and painted another layer of textile paint on and put it back in the sun.<br />

I like the complexity of it and hope to make some more of these. This one measures 18 X 22 inches. Here's another layed print:<br />

They're a little more complex than my original prints. I always like to learn a bit more. If you're interested in buying any of these prints let me know. We can arrange that you pay me by e-transfer. They are on Kona cotton fabric and are perfect for any textile art project. It's always fun to study with someone and see how they do things. Here are my first lesson results from each. These samples were dyed in my natural indigo dye vat. Making the indigo vat is an adventure in itself!<br />

The top right is Bachelor's Button which is a first for me. The flower did give off some nice blues. I didn't have much luck last year but I had a lot more luck this year. One trick is to add a little bit of baking soda to the dye pot to darken the colour. I've added the scarf to the dye solution in this photo and it's in the pot on the stove:<br />

I ended up making two scarves. I also read about using an after rinse in ferrous sulphate solution to get dark blue/purple colours. So I took one dyed scarf and tied it off with some elastics. I tied some coins into the ends. Then I did the after rinse with a very small amount of ferrous sulphate. The effect was so quick and strong I had to pull it out very quickly. But here are the results of before and after. I'm still pleased with the result and will try a weaker solution next time:<br />
